'From Geometry to Artistry', form becomes art

Transforming mechanical instruments into objects of art and design is an activity dear to Vacheron Constantin.

Harmony Dual Time in rose gold (2015).

A sketch, a geometric design and its technical evolutions give life to a world of shapes, colours and textures typical of the Maison and its aesthetic values. Far from being an end in themselves, the technical requirements of a Vacheron Constantin timepiece call for an aesthetic exploration that can transcend them. Far beyond function, the 'form' thus expresses the creative impetus that brings together artisans, designers, finisseurs, dial makers and leather craftsmen around a single timepiece.

Yellow gold square watch, 'Cioccolatone', silver-coloured dial (1954).

The pursuit of precision, rigorous execution and the perfect balance of forces - all essential skills for making watch movements - are part of a broader purpose, aimed at ensuring that a watch becomes a vehicle for emotions. For the Maison, watchmaking 'geometry' thus becomes an artistic field, transforming the measurement of time into an object to be contemplated.

The very rich collection of Vacheron Constantinwhich includes over 1,600 timepieces, is complemented by an extraordinary archive of approximately 420 linear metres, which contains the correspondence of the founding members, and casts a fascinating light - both historically and artistically - on the activities of the Maison over the years and centuries. The collection also lends invaluable documentary value to the exhibition 'From Geometry to Artistry'. The exhibition will be open until 10 July at the Vacheron Constantin boutique in Via Verri 7, Milan.
