An evolving design: the Tank Française by Cartier

What changes with the new edition of the Tank Française, Cartier's iconic watch launched in 1996.

The Tank Française, a watch that became part of the legendary Tank collection created by Louis Cartier in 1917, is making a comeback. Its main feature from the outset was its architecture, based on a monobloc case and bracelet construction that the Parisian Maison has now chosen to refine with a more ergonomic approach.

"The new Tank Française reflects a creative choice: as with a gemstone whose original spirit is to be rediscovered, it was a question of capturing its essential form, simplifying its main lines and freeing them of all superfluous ornamentation, in order to return to the genesis of the myth," explains Marie-Laure Cérède, Director of Jewellery and Watchmaking Creation at Cartier.

For optimal comfort on the wrist, the crown is now integrated into the case (available in steel, in small, medium and large sizes, and in 18-carat yellow gold, in small and medium sizes, with or without diamonds). The finish also differs slightly from that of previous editions, as satin-finished surfaces now stand out for a more contemporary look than before.

Other new elements are the soleil decoration on the dial surface and the movement used: the large model, in steel, is mechanical with automatic winding. The others are all equipped with quartz movements. Prices range from €3,800 for the small model in steel to €33,600 for the medium model in 18-carat yellow gold and diamonds.

To launch the new Tank Française, Cartier created a video campaign featuring French actress Catherine Deneuve and American actor Rami Malek.
