Tissot's PRX 'turns into a rocket missile' in the special Ufo Robot Grendizer series, dedicated to the famous Japanese manga.
What do Ufo Robot Goldrake and the PRX of Tissot? Firstly, the fact that both were launched in the late 1970s. The first is the most famous Japanese manga ever, one of the myths of Generation X, which first arrived on European screens in 1978. The second, created in the same year, is one of the watches that played a leading role in the advent of steel models with integrated bracelets, led at the time by the Royal Oak. We are talking about a model launched under the name Seastar and later registered as PRX. Not a luxury watch, then as now, but an ideal child of an era that is experiencing a huge revival today.
The second reason that links them is the recent collaboration signed with the PRX Ufo Robot Grendizer special edition. The latter, for the uninitiated, is the original Japanese name of the famous robot, recently returned to the screens with the reboot entitled Grendizer U. The watch embodies the vintage 70s design of the PRX enhanced by the iconic details of the popular anime series.
70s design and iconic references to the world of Goldrake
The PRX Ufo Robot Grendizer mounts Tissot's Powermatic 80 calibre.
We find again in the PRX Ufo Robot Grendizer the tonneau case (40 mm in diameter) and the smooth, thin, round bezel, declined in 316L steel. The blue dial (one of Goldrake's colours) is engraved with the image of the robot that lights up in the dark thanks to the use of yellow SuperLuminova. But the references do not end there: The seconds hand is stylised as a space halberd, one of the super robot's weapons, and in the upper flange a Japanese text bears the original title of Goldrake.
The mineral glass back shows the Powermatic 80 automatic calibre with a Nivachron balance spring that guarantees protection against magnetic fields and boasts a power reserve of 80 hours. The oscillating weight has been personalised with the image of Ufo Robot and the inscription 'Tissot x Goldrake'.
A special Spazer-shaped case for the PRX Ufo Robot Grendizer
Goldrake and Tissot: a special collaboration.
The packaging is also special and Goldrake fans will appreciate it a lot, because the case is modelled on the Spazer, Goldrake's legendary spaceship, which in turn is enclosed in a special box featuring Go Nagai's original drawings, its creator, who said: 'By combining Ufo Robot Goldrake's fight for a better future and PRX's journey of marking important milestones in life, we have created a watch that is a true tribute to their heritage and tradition.
