Pre-Sihh 2018: a special watch dedicated to Walter Lange

A unique piece that A. Lange & Söhne dedicates to the man who brought precision watchmaking back to Glashütte in 1990. Walter Lange passed away last year and the news came on the very morning of the second day of the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. Lange CEO Wilhelm Schmid said at the time: "The best way to honour him is to ensure the continuity and development of the company he founded."
At Sihh 2018, the brand pays tribute to him with the 1815 'Homage to Walter Lange', which, with its black enamel dial and steel case, is a unique timepiece equipped with jumping seconds. The jumping second was among his favourite complications because it represents the essence of precision watchmaking and is at the same time part of the family history. It does not, in fact, divide the second into individual units in accordance with the frequency of the balance, but displays it as a unit of time. Via a pusher at two o'clock, the large seconds hand can be started and stopped. The idea dates back to an invention by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in 1867 and developed in 1877 by his son Richard, with which he obtained one of the first patents in Germany.
The new manual movement has a special L1924 calibre number that refers to Walter Lange's year of birth and the first three digits of the reference 297.078 refer to his date of birth, 29 July. Alongside this unique piece, limited editions have been produced in yellow, white and pink gold. The steel version will be offered at a charity auction in 2018.
