It all started as a rumour at the beginning of 2021, then Philippe Stern's announcement officially declaring his decision to discontinue production of the Nautilus 5711-1A, a three-ball steel model with a blue dial, launched in 2006 to mark the model's 30th anniversary. After that, two things happened: first the launch of an edition with an olive green dial, already out of the catalogue, then that of a limited edition made for Tiffany. And finally, retirement. Or so it seemed.
But was it really the swansong of the holy grail of luxury sports watches? To answer the question comes the new 5811/1G-001, a reinterpretation of the 5711 with a blue dial and black shaded rim, but with a case (for now?) in white gold. After all, two years ago, Thierry Stern, President of Patek Philippe, already hinted that there would be a return of the three-hand Nautilus in a material other than steel.
However, we also note other differences. Slightly enlarged in size to 41 mm, the 5811 reflects its affinity with the original Nautilus of 1976 by incorporating its two-part case construction. It also features some technical refinements and patented innovations, including a new buckle with safety system.
The movement is still the automatic 26-330 S C calibre, visible through the sapphire case back, with a 'stop seconds' function for one hour to the second.
