Panerai - New P.5000 calibre

The eight-day power reserve is part of Officine Panerai's history. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, in fact, Panerai adopted an Angelus calibre with sixteen lines and an eight-day power reserve: a long reserve, functional to the needs of the Italian Navy's raiders, who during their exploits had to be able to count on an instrument of absolute and lasting reliability. This tradition is renewed today with the calibre P.5000, the new hand-wound movement with an eight-day power reserve that makes its debut in the new Luminor Marina 8 Days and Luminor Marina 8 Days Red Gold. The two new timepieces respect the more classic aesthetic codes of the Luminor Marina, characterised by the extreme essentiality of the case and dial design. The case, measuring 44mm in diameter, is immediately distinguished by the bridge device with clamping lever protecting the winding crown. It is available in AISI 316L stainless steel or 5Npt red gold, an alloy characterised by a high percentage of copper, which gives it a particularly intense colouring, and a share of platinum, which helps prevent oxidation. The dial, with its "sandwich" structure that ensures the clearest reading, houses large linear or numeral hour markers and a small seconds dial at nine o'clock, and is black in the steel model and brown in the red gold model. The hand-wound P.5000 calibre, visible through the sapphire-glass porthole opening in the case back, was developed and manufactured entirely in the Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel. It has a diameter of 15¾ lignes and a thickness of 4.5 mm, and a very solid construction in which a large satin-brushed plate, with a diamond-polished angle, conceals almost all the gear-trains, allowing a glimpse of the variable-inertia balance oscillating at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour. The long power reserve is achieved by means of two barrels coupled in series that accumulate an eight-day power reserve. The Luminor Marina 8 Days (PAM00510) and the Luminor Marina 8 Days Red Gold (PAM00511) are part of the Historical Collection and are completed by a strap in black leather, in the steel version, or in brown alligator, in the red gold version, with a buckle in the same material as the case.

The P.5000 calibre

Eight days of power reserve and manual winding: the calibre P.5000 brings together two features that have been part of Panerai watch history since the very first models created for the Italian Navy's raiding parties. With a diameter of 15 ¾ lignes (35.7 mm) and a thickness of 4.5 mm, the P.5000 calibre has 21 jewels, is made up of 127 components and its balance oscillates at a frequency of 3 Hz, equivalent to 21,600 vibrations per hour. The original architecture, of great solidity, recalls that of ancient movements in which the mechanism is enclosed between two plates that cover most of the gear-trains and allow only a few details to be glimpsed, such as the balance bridge and intermediate wheel. The balance wheel of the P.5000 calibre has a variable inertia: its period of oscillation is adjusted by acting on the small screws located on the perimeter of the wheel and the balance spring is free, i.e. without the racket that serves to modify its active length. The bridge supporting the balance wheel is fixed by two screws under which are toothed washers that can rotate in either direction and serve to adjust the height clearance of the balance axis. This technical solution contributes to the smooth functioning of the escapement in the event of shocks. The long 192-hour power reserve, equivalent to 8 days, is achieved by coupling two barrels in series with fixed hairpins. The double device makes it possible to use longer and thinner winding springs, which is beneficial for the duration and uniformity of energy delivery.
