Oris has a great tradition in the creation of in-house movements. Indeed, the Hölstein-based company has created over 270 calibres since its foundation in 1904. A tradition revived in 2013 with the birth of the Oris Movement Creation Programme, which celebrates its first 10 years. It does so, not surprisingly, by launching a new mechanical movement, the tenth in nine years: calibre 473.
It is a hand-wound, antimagnetic mechanical movement with a power reserve of no less than five days. Calibre 473 is visible through the sapphire glass on the case back, and also shows the power reserve indication on the calibre itself, by means of a blued hand.
The movement (30 mm diameter, 28,800 vib/h, 27 jewels, based on the self-winding Calibre 403) is covered by a 10-year warranty, which is also valid for the other watch components thanks to the registration on MyOris. This new movement equips the Big Crown Calibre 473, equipped with the iconic Pointer Date (the central hand date display), one of the symbols of Oris since 1938.
The watch employs a 38 mm steel case, combined with a blue dial on which SuperLuminova luminescent baton hands, SuperLuminova luminescent Arabic numeral and triangular hour markers, small seconds at 6 o'clock, and the aforementioned red triangular-tipped central date hand are housed. The curved sapphire crystal that protects it is anti-reflective on both sides. Fastening it to the wrist is an olive-brown, sustainably sourced deerskin strap made by Cervo Volante, with an adjustable steel butterfly buckle and safety push-buttons.
