Minimalist style for the Sun and Moon, the first watch produced by the Italian brand Elmà Watches, founded by Andrea Di Ciancia, a designer from Turin, born in 1994. Its main feature is the presence of a sun and moon instead of hands on the matt black dial. The hour markers are simple single or yellow and double grey dots (for the canonical hours), while in the centre a small black disc with the collection's logo rotates in place of the continuous seconds hand. The hours are indicated by a small sun, on the outermost band, and the minutes by a moon, which is located more towards the centre of the dial.
On the very first prototypes, the celestial bodies were represented by two small spheres in three dimensions. A complicated solution that unnecessarily increased the thickness of the watch. On the final version, the effect of depth is achieved by printing the two indicators slightly in relief on two polypropylene discs positioned below the black discs perforated in correspondence, with which they form a sandwich.
The 38 mm steel case (made by a Voghera supplier like all the other components) is almost totally polished and has essential lines: smooth bezel and lugs tapered at the ends, with a brushed top. Resistant to a pressure of 10 atmospheres, the watch is powered by a Miyota 8215 self-winding mechanical calibre, with a 40-hour power reserve.
Upcoming projects? As Di Ciancia himself explains: "I am developing two new collections dedicated to the land and the sea, to close the circle started with the Sun and Moon collection dedicated to the sky. The case will always be the same, also because the 38 mm size is, in my opinion, the most versatile, but the layout of both will be completely different and the diver will have superior water-resistance and obviously a rotating bezel". Price: 452 euros.
