Why this initiative?
The Covid-19 emergency continues. So far the highest price has been paid by Lombardy and Milan, but we are told it will be felt more and more in the central and southern regions as well. We listen to the radio and joke about what activities to do at home. The difficulty we all face, however, is not finding something to do. It is finding the strength to overcome the shock of being forced to stay within our four walls.
I have a two and a half year old girl, who asks me to go to the park to play on the swing and write with chalk on the ground with her little friend Gabri. She wants her little life and her little girl world back. I don't know what to say to her and so I make up stories, like all parents. I tell her we are on holiday. But there is nothing here that tastes like a holiday and even she notices.
I wish I could help, but instead, all I can do is stand here, watching the world turned upside down on TV. Doctors and nurses exhausted by fatigue, begging us to perform a very simple act: don't leave. While they work hard, giving their souls in hospitals that even before the emergency were complex and unfortunately, in many cases, understructured places.
Caged lions, that's how we feel.
Why am I writing these lines out of context under the headline The Watch? Because I would like to repeat the same worn-out appeal to those who read us every month: don't leave home. Protect yourself and your loved ones.
Despite all this, work when it can continues. Indeed, work is perhaps what is saving me and others from the unbearable loss of normality. And so the next issue of The Watch will be on newsstands from this week. So, I thought one small thing I could do.
