The A. Lange & Söhne manufactory is a place between tradition and innovation. It is located opposite the company's historic buildings: a large building at the southern entrance to Glashütte, the German town south of Berlin at the foot of the Ore Mountains, where Ferdinand Adolph Lange created the foundations of Saxon haute horlogerie in 1845 with the foundation of his watch company.
The more than 5,000 square metres of the building were designed by the Swiss firm Jessenvollenweider Architektur putting the environment first: an important example of sustainable architecture and innovative energy management, the A. Lange & Söhne house is CO2 free and is also the largest geothermal-powered facility in Saxony, with 55 heat exchangers extending to a depth of 125 metres. It also has a double-skin walk-in façade that has an air-conditioning function and inside houses various new technologies with a green character.
The spaces, conceived and organised in the name of composure and formal rigour, have modern finishes and also focus on ergonomics and brightness, as revealed by the more than 250 large windows with a slight inclination that guarantee optimal lighting. This is where the watchmakers' workshops, the areas where Lange movement components are produced and the engraving department are located.
Instead, the other activities, including administration, product development and finishing departments, are housed in the company's historic buildings, which employ over 600 people in Glashütte. Craftsmen, creatives and other professionals who, since 1990, when the company was relaunched by Walter Lange together with his partner Günter Blümlein, have contributed to bringing the name A. Lange & Söhne to a pre-eminent role in the world of precision watchmaking.
