Putting technique at the service of aesthetics: the creative principle at the heart of Cartier watchmaking.
More than 1,250 employees of over 30 different nationalities spread over five sitesincluding one with almost 120 trades, located in three different cantons of Switzerland. They are the (big) numbers of Cartier manufactures.
Founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier (1819-1904)In fact, the Maison makes its timepieces in different structures that combine craftsmanship and industry, creativity and technique.
The main Cartier watchmaking site is the manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fondsa large, modern building housing 850 employees over an area of 33,000 square metres and brings together most of the professions involvedfrom creation to production phases, as well as administrative and support functions.
Cartier and the Maison des Métiers d'Art
Next to the main manufacture is the Maison des Métiers d'Art: a renovated old farmhouse housing 40 skilled craftsmen skilled in the applied arts of watchmaking.
They range from the art of firewhich refers to enamel and its variants, to that of metalworkingwith granulation and watermarking, to the art of compositionwith the inlay of different materials.
Couvet's Manufacturing Lab, on the other hand, is a centre dedicated to research with the aim of anticipating the evolution of the watchmaking professions and improving customer service, employee working conditions and product quality and traceability. Not forgetting, finally, the manufacture of Glovelier, in the Jura, and that of Villars-sur-Glânein the canton of Fribourg.
The company's dedication to environmental protection, which it realises in several areas, is remarkable. These include: eco-design in the development of new products, responsible sourcing of raw materials and components, reducing their CO2 emissions and implementing environmental best practices.
