'Living on Air': an immersive exhibition from 8 to 13 April for Milan Design Week tells the story of Jaeger-LeCoultre's Atmos clock.
Running from 8 to 13 April at Villa Mozart during Milan Design Week, the exhibition 'Living on Air' celebrates the history of Atmos by Jaeger-LeCoultre. We are talking about an extraordinary table clock that is completely unrelated to any kind of power supply or energy source, electrical or mechanical, since it links its operation to a form of energy as old as the world: air.
A special device (invented in 1928 by Swiss engineer Jean-Léon Reutter and used by Jaeger-LeCoultre ever since on all the many versions of the Atmos) keeps the gears of the watch in motion thanks to the natural variations in temperature of the surrounding environment.
The Jaeger-LeCoultre exhibition presents a unique collection of 19 different Atmos clocks spanning nine decades, with archival materials and technical drawings, and offers the presence of a watchmaker to demonstrate the functioning of the mechanism.
'Living on Air' tells the Atmos story in four chapters
The Genesis; The Mechanism; The Design; The Complication: Jaeger-LeCoultre pays tribute to the design and technical virtuosity of the Atmos.
The experience is immersive and is divided into four chapters. Genesiswith the history of the centuries-long quest for perpetual motion; The Mechanism, which explains how thermal energy is transformed into mechanical energy to power movement; Design, Atmos as objet d'art, which reveals the artistry and mechanics behind each unique piece.
And finally The Complication, i.e. the challenge in adding additional functions to the mechanism without increasing energy consumption (you can also admire the Atmos Tellurium, the most complex pendulum clock ever made).
'Living on Air' is a free immersive exhibition
A new Atmos clock for Milan Design Week.
'Living on Air' will be open to the public with free admission from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.. Visitors can register online in advance at this link (https://online-booking.jaeger-lecoultre.com/atelier/134?locale=it_CH) or on arrival at the exhibition. For the occasion, Jaeger-LeCoultre will present a new limited edition Atmos clock, reflecting the contemporary values of Milan Design Week.
