If this is not the first time Royal Oak has used ceramic, it is certainly the first time it has adopted blue ceramic. A bold, intense blue that gives new personality to the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar, already seen in white or black versions. But this latest colourful set-up is truly polarising and impactful. Certainly when one dares so much, opinions may well differ, but one fact is that this is an iconic watch, combining a resolutely modern and up-to-date style with a classic type of complication: and one that brings great technical and production expertise to the table.
To obtain the blue pigment after firing, Zirconium Oxide powder (ZrO2) has been specially modified. Achieving a homogeneous colour was a further challenge, as the final nuance of the ceramic depends on the sintering temperature, which does not allow for variations. Another challenge was the finishing: alternating satin and polished bevels were applied by hand with great care, creating a rich play of light that enhances both the ceramic and the multifaceted architecture of Royal Oak.
To achieve a monochrome look, the tone of the Grande Tapisserie dial was also modified. The blue shades of the counters and flange, obtained by means of Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD), have been harmonised with the colours of the blue ceramic case and bracelet.
The movement is the automatic calibre 5134, only 4.3 mm thick and with a 40-hour power reserve. A slim calibre, despite the complexity of the perpetual calendar, which allows the 41 mm diameter case to remain within an overall thickness of 9.5 mm. And the comfort on the wrist is underlined by the lightness of the ceramic.
