On 9 February, the first boutique was opened on New York's famous 5th Avenue, at number 57. Chanel on American soil entirely dedicated to the Maison's watchmaking and jewellery production.
Designed by architect Peter Marino, a long-standing collaborator of Chanel, the two-storey boutique is a celebration of the House's savoir-faire, as well as a tribute to the famous Parisian jewellery workshop located at 18 Place Vendôme.
Moreover, it is a tribute to Mademoiselle Chanel, to her lucky number (the '5' of course), to her affinity with the world of art and decoration, and to the inimitable interiors of her flat in Rue Cambon, in the heart of Paris.
The façade of the boutique is decorated with black granite and bronze slabs, positioned behind a glass facade. The interior of the boutique is characterised by shades of gold and black, and embellished with rock crystal, one of Coco Chanel's favourite materials.
Two rooms are entirely dedicated to high jewellery, while the room dedicated to watches leads to the upper floor. There is also a lounge reserved for private appointments with customers. Inside the boutique are many fine art objects, including ceramic camels from the Tang dynasty and a Louis XV desk by Jacques Dubois.
But that's not all: in the gallery room there is a unique sculpture of patinated steel, oxidised copper and amber-coloured crystal, created by the French artist André Dubreuil. In the clock room, on the other hand, we find, among others, a wall collage with a customised polyptych of 13 panels of gold leaf on linen canvas by the Iranian-American painter Y.Z. Kami, just to mention a few of the many important works of art that enrich the shop.
The boutique naturally features the most iconic collections of fine jewellery, watchmaking and haute horlogerie, including the Coco Crush line, a tribute to the Maison's emblematic matelassé motif, with jewellery crafted in 18-carat white, yellow or beige gold. In addition, exclusively in the New York boutique, the Maison offers customers a special personalised engraving service for rings from the Coco Crush collection. Several celebrities were present at the boutique opening, including actresses Michelle Williams and Phoebe Tonkin.
