Currently on cinema screens, "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom' is the long-awaited sequel to 2018's 'Aquaman', based on the DC Comics character of the same name. It stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry/Aquaman.
In the new film, on the wrist of the villains, Black Manta played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Dr Stephen Shin played by Randall Park, are two red and blue prototype luminaries made by the XPL division of IWCdedicated to research into advanced materials and protection against gravitational forces. The two stage watches were the inspiration for two limited edition models of 25 each of the Aquatimer Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month.
Both versions have black dials with red or blue SuperLuminova details, as in the models worn by the stars on screen. The case (at 49 mm, it is among the largest produced by the brand) is made of Ceratanium, a material developed by IWC and based on a patented titanium alloy.
It is light and robust like titanium but at the same time hard and scratch-resistant like ceramic. Like all models in the Aquatimer line, the watches have an external-internal rotating bezel equipped with the Safe Dive system: it only rotates anti-clockwise.
Water-resistant to 100 metres, they are equipped with the automatic 89802 calibre, a column-wheel flyback chronograph. The perpetual calendar is coupled with a large digital date display showing the day and month, based on the so-called "jumping advance" system, which sets aside a small amount of energy with each click of the date at midnight. The watches are fitted with rubber straps and equipped with a quick-change system.
