On 26 October next, during a thematic auction dedicated to some of the most famous iconic collector's watches of the last century, a legendary specimen will be offered for sale in New York by Phillips with Bacs & Russo. It is the Rolex Daytona Ref. 6239 that belonged to Paul Newman, the watch that inspired the nickname for one of the most prestigious versions of this famous chronograph. The watch was given to the actor by his wife Joanne Woodward while they were filming the 1969 movie "Winning", engraved with the inscription "Drive carefully, me". In 1984, Newman gave it to James Cox, then fiancé of his daughter Nell, who was unable to answer the question "What time is it?", as he did not own a watch. James and Nell, who have remained good friends, have today decided to put this watch up for auction and with part of the proceeds of the sales will fund the charitable activities of the Newman's Own Foundation. Paul Newman's Daytona will be put up for sale with an estimate in excess of $1 million.
