Mido celebrates the 80th anniversary of the Ocean Star by presenting a special edition of the GMT model, water-resistant to 20 atmospheres.
First presented in 1944, the Ocean Star is certainly one of the most iconic models by Mido. This year the collection turns 80 years old, and for the occasion, the company presents a new GMT variant, with a 40.5 mm steel case (as opposed to the 44 mm of the 'normal' Ocean Star GMT) combined with a domed 'glassbox' type sapphire crystal. The bidirectional rotating bezel with a navy blue aluminium disc displays 24-hour markers.
Three time zones under control with the Ocean Star GMT
The red central 24-hour hand and the bi-directional rotating bezel make it possible to read three different time zones.
On the dial, navy blue like the bezel, are the distinctive shark-tooth indices and SuperLuminova luminescent hands, as well as a red lacquered central hand (with luminescent tip) that makes one revolution of the dial in 24 hours. The hour markers for the second time zone are located on the flange, while the date window opens at 3 o'clock. Both the crown and back are screwed down, and water resistance is guaranteed up to 20 atmospheres of pressure.
At the heart of the watch is the Mido 80 calibre (based on ETA C07.661, 5.86 mm, 25 jewels, 21,600 vib/h), mechanical with automatic winding, with antimagnetic Nivachron balance spring and 80-hour power reserve. The steel bracelet on 11 rows of links is equipped with a folding clasp with extension and safety catch.
Supplied, Mido also provides an additional Nato strap that is easily interchangeable, navy blue with a grey centre line and fitted with a personalised buckle.
Finally, those who purchase the watch on the House website (at this link) will receive a handy and useful winding rotor as a gift, to keep the watch wound at an optimal level at all times.
