A new white lacquered dial recalls space exploration and the distinctive heritage of Omega's Moonwatch.
Traditionally theOmega Speedmaster Moonwatch in steel is combined with a black dial. Not least because ever since the Speedmaster's birth in 1957, even before it became the Moonwatch, the aim has been to ensure easy readability and great reliability. For this, Omega chose white hands and indices in contrast to the black background. The launch of an unprecedented all-white dial (including the counters) was therefore a surprise: not a special or commemorative edition, but a standard Moonwatch in steel.
Someone had already spotted it in November last year on the wrist of brand ambassador Daniel Craig during the Planet Omega exhibition in New York. Now, finally, the watch has been officially launched and will be available to the public. In this new version, the same principles of contrasting black background/white indices have been applied in reverse: a white dial with applied indexes and black details. Also standing out is the Speedmaster inscription in red. All finished with a high-gloss lacquer, a novel technique for the Moonwatch 'step' dial.
Omega Moonwatch: a white dial evoking the Speedmaster's space career
The Speedmaster is the watch used by NASA in space missions and the one that went to the Moon in 1969.
The main inspiration for the colour comes from astronauts' space suits, particularly those used during extra-vehicular activities (EVA). The choice is not only aesthetic but carries with it an authentic connection to the history of space exploration. Because, ça va sans dir, all the astronauts of the 1969 Apollo XI programme, which became one of the most extraordinary technological achievements ever reached by mankind by taking him to the moon for the first time. were equipped with the Speedmaster Professional.
And the white dial also refers to the Alaska Project models of the 1960s, part of a secret NASA project to create the perfect space watch, and the 2008 limited edition. The red used for the Speedmaster inscription on the new Moonwatch is a tribute to the red protective case of the Alaska I.
