Made to celebrate the partnership launched last year with the America's Cup team Alinghi Red Bull Racing, these new Tudor Pelagos FXD (in chrono and solotempo versions) have several brand-new features. Starting with the material used to make the case (42 mm for the three-hand and 43 for the chronograph) and the bezel disc, namely a matt black carbon composite.
The bezel itself (with a graduation useful for countdown, which is essential at the start of regattas) is made of titanium, as are the crown (screwed down) and the chrono pushers (where present). Rotating on 120 clicks, the bezel is also equipped with indexes with SuperLuminova Grade X1 coating, a luminescent material that offers up to 60% superior performance after two hours compared to standard grades. The case back (with engraved Alinghi Red Bull Racing logo) and inner case are made of steel.
These same materials are also used in the Alinghi Red Bull Racing Edition team's AC75 monohull. Other references to the boat can be found in the colours used for the dial and the jacquard fabric strap with hook-and-loop fastener, namely blue with red details, as well as the discreet 'Alinghi Red Bull Racing' inscription at 12 o'clock on the flange.
Worthy of note is the debut of the chronograph in the Pelagos collection: the calibre used is the MT5813 (28,800 vib/h, 41 jewels, 70-hour power reserve, Cosc chronometer, precision between -2 and +4 seconds per day, silicon balance spring), mechanical, in-house made, with vertical clutch and column wheel.
The solotempo model also employs an IWC-manufactured calibre: this is the MT5602 (25 jewels, 28,800 vib/h, 70-hour power reserve, silicon balance spring, Cosc chronometer, precision between -2 and +4 seconds per day), mechanical with automatic winding.
On the matt blue dial, protected by a flat sapphire crystal, in addition to the famous snowflake hands (introduced by Tudor in 1969), there are oversized geometric hour markers made of luminescent ceramic composite. These elements are also subjected to luminescent treatment with SuperLuminova Grade X1. On the chronograph, in addition to the additional counters for the chrono minutes at 3 o'clock and continuous seconds at 9 o'clock, there is a date window at 6 o'clock. Both models are guaranteed water-resistant to 20 atmospheres of pressure.
