For more than ten years, Nomos Glashütte has been actively supporting Doctors Without Borders by producing watches in special series for humanitarian support. To date, more than 10,000 have been produced in 14 different models, all recognisable by the number 12 in red. For each one, a portion of the sales proceeds is donated directly to people in need.
Médecins Sans Frontières, a humanitarian non-governmental organisation focused on providing medical relief and assistance to people in all places in the world where the right to care is not guaranteed, was founded in Paris in 1971. The first mission in a conflict zone took place during the civil war in Lebanon, when doctors and nurses spent months treating the wounded on both sides in the basement of a clinic.
Today, Doctors Without Borders has member associations in 25 countries and tens of thousands of professionals are involved in more than 70 countries. Doctors, nurses, psychologists, administrative staff and logistics experts. In 1999, the organisation was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its work.
The Nomos timepiece celebrating the 50th anniversary of Médecins sans Frontières was available worldwide for the first time. It is the Tangente 38, the classic round, minimalist Saxon watch with manual winding, an expression of the Bauhaus style. For every model sold, of all 2,021 pieces produced, 100 euros are donated to Doctors Without Borders.
The polished steel case has a slim profile of only 6.7 mm, thanks to the hand-wound Alpha calibre. It is a movement just 2.6 mm thick, offering a power reserve of 43 hours. Equipped with a dark grey fabric strap, it bears the inscription '50 ans de Mèdicins Sans Frontières' on the galvanised white dial at 6 o'clock below the small seconds. The anniversary is also commemorated with an engraving on the case back.
