In tribute to Clive Cussler, novelist, maritime explorer and long-time inspiration for the brand, Doxa presents a new SUB 300T. The well-known American adventure novelist who passed away three years ago, the author of no fewer than 85 books that have sold over 100 million copies, also discovered numerous wrecks through NUMA (an acronym that stands for National Underwater & Marine Agency), a non-profit foundation he founded and which specialises in the location, identification and recovery of marine wrecks of historical significance.
Cussler's novels have contributed greatly to making the name Doxa known throughout the world. In fact, the famous orange clock face was instrumental in helping Dirk Pitt, the hero of his books, by enabling him to tell the time accurately during his missions.
The new Sub 300T Clive Cussler is faithful to the key features of the collection, while still offering original details, including the unprecedented handmade dial, reminiscent of a vintage compass.
The use of steel with an aged look for the case, bracelet, folding clasp and pin buckle (in the case of the Nato strap in beige) gives this watch an unprecedented and attractive antique look.
The 42.5 by 44.5 mm case (thickness is 14 mm) is water-resistant to an impressive 1,200 metres, and is equipped with a helium gas escape valve. The unidirectional rotating bezel, knurled on the edge, bears the scale for decompression times and is engraved (on the side) with the inscription 'In honour of Clive Cussler'.
On the dial, which is protected by a flat sapphire crystal and has luminescent hands and hour markers, of particular note is the red colouring of the numerals 7, 15 and 31 of the date display at 3 o'clock, in remembrance of Cussler's date of birth, 15 July 1931.
The new Doxa Sub 300T Clive Cussler is powered by an ETA-based self-winding mechanical movement (ETA calibre 2824-2, 26 jewels, 28,800 vibrations per hour), with a 38-hour power reserve. The watch is fitted with a steel "grain of rice" bracelet, with a folding clasp with safety push-buttons and an extension. A second strap in beige Nato fabric and a third in black rubber are included.
Commenting on this new collaboration, Jan Edöcs, CEO of Doxa, said: "Cussler's world-famous novels were a natural showcase for Doxa's watches, presenting them as essential tools for his heroic characters. The famous Doxa diver's watch with orange dial continues to be a permanent presence for his hero Dirk Pitt and accompanies him on his daredevil underwater adventures".
