This new and exclusive Freak X will be produced in a limited edition of only 30 pieces, available exclusively at Ulysse Nardin boutiques. Since 2001, Ulysse Nardin has specialised in silicon technology. In line with this approach, the Swiss watchmaker has once again transformed a material originating from the electronics industry into a true masterpiece of artistic craftsmanship by presenting a striking Freak X, embellished with a decoration technique that until now was almost completely unknown: silicon inlay. The latter, a revolutionary material par excellence, has already proven its qualities by being used for certain components of Ulysse Nardin movements. Today, it is showing off its virtues for the second time by being applied to dials. A completely new revelation in the world of watchmaking, silicon inlay involves the assembly of silicon fragments cut into segments with a plasma accelerator. The finesse of this technique relies on the skill of the craftsman, as silicon easily grits and is fragile when handled. All that is needed is to slightly overlap the segments on top of each other (rather than fitting them together) to chip the edges. It is therefore a real feat of 'technological craftsmanship' to assemble a collage of segments by hand to create these amazing mosaics. The end result offers a unique impact. Moreover, the mosaics inlaid on the Freak X Marquetry are remarkably reactive to light. Furthermore, for this watch, Ulysse Nardin used an advanced silicon technology to produce a matt effect on the blue part of the decorative plate, creating a visual contrast with the green 'X' of inlaid silicon. The new Freak X Marquetry uses a 43 mm case in titanium, with a crown and bezel that have undergone a blue PVD treatment. The automatic mechanical movement is of the carrousel type, which rotates on itself every hour to indicate the time. It has no dial or hands: the central bridge serves as the minute hand and one of the wheels indicates the hours. Inside, clearly visible, pulsates a super-lightweight silicon balance with nickel counterweights and stabilising micro-blades. The movement itself, Calibre UN-230 (205 components, 21,600 vibrations per hour, 72-hour power reserve), is a fusion of the Manufacture Calibre UN-118 and FREAK VISION Calibre UN- 250. Water resistance is guaranteed up to 5 atmospheres of pressure.
