Patek Philippe's Calatrava, presented in 1932 as Ref. 96 (the first model of the manufacture to bear a reference number), is the quintessence of the classic wristwatch with a round case. Over the years, its essential design, inspired by the minimalist Bauhaus principle that "the form of an object is dictated by its function", has been reinterpreted in various versions for men and women, with flat or rounded, smooth, diamond-encrusted or guilloché bezels, as well as in an ultra-flat version or with an Officier-style case. Today, Patek Philippe renews the Calatrava "Clous de Paris" by reinterpreting its iconic design in a contemporary key. The new Ref. 6119 - a number that pays tribute to the historical model 3919 and the Ref. 5119 of 2006 - differs first of all by its slightly increased diameter (39 mm), a size in line with current tastes. The stylistic evolution also concerns the black lacquered Roman numerals on a white background of Refs. 3919 and 5119, which now give way to 18-carat gold facetted obus-style applied hour markers (with a double index at 12 o'clock). The large gold Dauphine hands, reminiscent of Ref. 96 albeit with three facets instead of two, ensure perfect legibility. The small seconds are positioned at 6 o'clock, in a sub-dial divided into four sectors. The bezel with its guilloché motif a "Clous de Paris" adopts a slightly wider, bevelled profile, with a thin polished fillet surrounding the box-type sapphire crystal. The shape of the lugs and bracelet has also been redesigned. The straight lugs of Ref. 3919 have been replaced by curved lugs inspired by Ref. 96 and the automatic models of the 1990s. With the introduction of a new hand-wound movement, the Calatrava Ref. 6119 "Clous de Paris" also inaugurates a new chapter in the history of Patek Philippe's most famous collection: it is, in fact, an opportunity for the company to introduce a basic movement to add to its rich portfolio of in-house manufactured calibres. The aim was to develop a hand-wound movement with a diameter larger than that of the calibre 215 PS, but one that could fit inside extremely flat cases. The new Calibre 30-255 PS has a case diameter of 30.4 mm (total diameter 31 mm), as opposed to the 21.5 mm of the 215 PS (total diameter 21.9 mm), and an unchanged thickness of 2.55 mm: hence its name. The movement is distinguished by its two barrels mounted 'in parallel' (the power reserve is at least 65 hours), i.e. winding and winding simultaneously and engaging simultaneously with the centre pinion: an architecture used very rarely. Calibre 30-255 PS also meets the very strict precision criteria of the Patek Philippe Seal, with a maximum deviation of -3/+2 seconds per day. The new Calatrava "Clous de Paris" Ref. 6119 is offered in two variants, either with a rose gold case and silver-plated dial (with a shiny chocolate brown alligator strap) or with a white gold case and anthracite grey dial (with a shiny black alligator strap).
