Zenith Chronomaster Revival A385

1969 was the year Zenith launched the El Primero, the world's first high-frequency automatic chronograph. It made its debut with three different steel models, and one of these was the A385, a chronograph with a tonneau-shaped steel case and a fascinating shaded brown dial, the first "smoky" dial ever made in the watch industry. In 1970, the A385 attracted international attention when it participated in Zenith's 'Operation Sky'. This extreme test consisted of attaching the watch to the landing gear of an Air France Boeing 707 during a flight from Paris to New York to test its resistance to external aggressions, such as drastic changes in temperature, the force of the winds or variations in atmospheric pressure. Upon landing, the watch was still working perfectly. After more than 50 years, the time has come for the A385 to return as the Chronomaster Revival. More than just a vintage-style creation, the Chronomaster Revival A385 is a full-fledged reproduction of the original 1969 model, for which the company performed a so-called 'reverse engineering' process. By consulting original blueprints and production plans, each element of the A385's 37 mm case, including the pump buttons, faithfully evokes the original 1969 model. The only noticeable differences are the domed sapphire crystal in place of the acrylic glass and the visible case back, instead of the closed case back, which offers a full view of the El Primero 400 calibre. In keeping with the retro theme, the Chronomaster Revival A385 is available in two versions: the first is with a "ladder" effect steel bracelet, a modern interpretation of the Gay Frères bracelets that became the emblem of the first El Primero watches; the second is with a light brown calfskin strap, which develops a unique patina with time and wear. The Chronomaster Revival A385 is available at Zenith boutiques and on the company's website, as well as from authorised dealers around the world.
Prices: 7,900 CHF (with calfskin strap); 8,400 CHF (with steel bracelet).
