All Cuervo y Sobrinos models reflect the history and 'character' of the company, as well as the intriguing and timeless charm of the place to which they belong, L'Habana, where, in 1882, Don Armando F. Rio y Cuervo started to run the watchmaking business founded by his uncle Don Ramon with his brothers. Hence the company's name (sobrinos in fact means nephews in the Spanish language) and from here began a growing success story, which over time led to CyS's signature watches becoming one of the most prized and sought-after creations in 1940s America. From its first boutique on the Cuban capital's Fifth Avenue, the company expanded on a par with jewellery names of the calibre of Tiffany and Cartier: three new branches were opened, the first in Pforzheim, in the Grand Duchy of Baden in Germany, the second in Paris, on the elegant Rue Mezlay, and the third in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the heart of Swiss watchmaking, while a large number of famous and important people passed through Cuba, from Einstein to Churchill, from Clark Gable to Hemingway, came to the boutique to purchase the company's timepieces, attracted by their aesthetic qualities and respectable technical features, but also by their special charm, the result of the island's evocative geographical and cultural setting.
In 2007, to celebrate its 125th anniversary, Cuervo y Sobrinos, which has returned to new splendour thanks to the foresight and entrepreneurship of the Spanish company Diarsa led by Marzio Villa, has produced a limited series of the Esplendidos Monopusher Chronograph in a total of 38 pieces: 28 in pink gold and 10 in grey gold, and a sumptuous Tourbillon in pink gold, in only 8 pieces.
